Introduction : The National Institute of Mass Communication, previously known as National Broadcasting Academy was a project of People's Republic of Bangladesh in cooperation with UNDP, UNESCO and ITU. It started functioning in 1980. The National Institute of Mass Communication NIMC, a department under the Ministry of Information, is the apex training centre for mass media and communication in Bangladesh. The Institute has facilities for conducting training courses on News Programme, and Engineering for Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television as well as private TV channels and freelance. NIMC also imparts training on Film and development communication. Apart from organizing regular Foundation Course for Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Information Cadre officers, the Institute provides training to other communication networks as well.

The overall objective of NIMC is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge and skill, and improve capabilities of broadcasting personnel working in Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, Film and Publication, Mass Communication Department and Press Information Department. The ultimate goal is to develop and promote the services of broadcasting, film and publication, press Information and mass communication for national development.

With UNICEF as partner, the NIMC is one of the implementing agencies of the National Project entitled “Advocacy and Communication for Children and Women”. The central objective of the project is to bring behavioral changes in the mindset of the people by influencing their attitude towards women and children. Under this project alone, NIMC has organized 69 training workshops and trained a total of 1469 mass media workers including 372 female trainers.
